FAQ

Common questions

How does MagicBPM measure tempo?

It listens through your iPhone's microphone and analyzes the rhythm of the music in real time using an on-device beat-detection engine. As it gathers enough of the beat, the displayed BPM stabilizes and a confidence indicator lets you know when the reading is reliable.

Does it record or upload my audio?

No. Audio is processed live on your device and then discarded. MagicBPM does not save recordings by default, has no servers, and sends no audio or analytics anywhere. See the Privacy Policy.

Why does the app need microphone access?

The microphone is the only way the app can "hear" the music it's measuring. iOS asks for permission the first time you start detection. If you previously declined, you can re-enable it in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → MagicBPM (or Settings → MagicBPM).

The BPM reading looks wrong or jumps around. What can I do?

A few things help:

• Move the phone closer to the speaker and reduce background noise.
• In Settings, choose the "Best accuracy" capture mode.
• Narrow the tempo range if you know roughly what to expect.
• Some tracks are genuinely ambiguous — a detector may lock onto half or double the "felt" tempo. Tapping the beat on the Metronome tab is a good cross-check.

It says "stabilizing" and never shows a number.

This usually means the input is too quiet or too noisy for a confident lock. Get closer to the source, make sure the microphone isn't covered, and confirm the app has microphone permission. If you're using a Bluetooth audio route (like a car kit), try the iPhone's built-in mic instead.

What's the Metronome tab?

A full metronome. Set the tempo by tapping the pad in time, typing a number, or nudging it ±1 (40–220 BPM), then press play for a steady click. Pick from eight time signatures (2/4 through 12/8) with the downbeat accented, and a beat indicator shows your place in the bar. It keeps playing even when your phone's silent switch is on. Tapping the pad to set a tempo also saves it to your History.

How do I rename or delete a reading in History?

Tap a reading to give it a label (like the song or set name). Swipe a row to delete it, or use the clear option to remove the whole list.

What does MagicBPM Pro include, and is it a subscription?

Pro is a one-time purchase (not a subscription). It unlocks unlimited history, removes ads, and supports continued development. Purchases are handled by the App Store.

I bought Pro but it's not showing up.

Use Restore Purchases in the app to re-sync your purchase with your Apple Account. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account used to buy it. If it still doesn't appear, email us and we'll help.

How do I get a refund?

Purchases are processed by Apple, so refunds are handled through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. If something went wrong on our end, let us know and we'll do our best to help.

Which devices and iOS versions are supported?

MagicBPM is an iPhone app. The current minimum iOS version is listed on the app's App Store page.
